Emily Burnham - Aspen Country Day School

Emily Burnham
Middle School Humanities Teacher

A third-generation Coloradan, Emily Burnham is from Fort Collins. She moved to the Roaring Fork Valley in 2016 to teach Fourth Grade at Aspen Elementary School (and to be closer to skiing!). Prior to that she taught in Longmont for eight years and also spent a year teaching in Trieste, Italy. She has a degree in English Literature from the University of Colorado and a masters degree in teaching from the University of Northern Colorado.

Which ACDS core value is most meaningful to you, and why?

Perseverance reflects the heart of learning and growth, and it’s an important part of the human experience. A common thread connecting humanity is that we all face challenges, and learning more about the world around us through literature, history, music, art and more, can help us examine how we face our own challenges and persevere to become even better versions of ourselves.

What led you to a career in education?

I was drawn to a career in education because of the impact teachers had on me as a student. I remember my fifth grade teacher encouraging me to submit a poem to a contest, my seventh grade English teacher who pushed me as a writer, and my favorite teacher, Mr. Davis, who taught high school anatomy and somehow made memorizing every muscle of the human body fun. Their ability to spark curiosity, encourage growth, and believe in me even when I doubted myself showed me how powerful education can be. I wanted to be that kind of teacher: someone who helps students discover their strengths, build confidence, and sees learning as a lifelong adventure. Teaching allows me to combine my love of learning with the opportunity to make a meaningful difference every day.

A personal accomplishment you’re proud of?

I’m especially proud of completing the Tour du Mont Blanc in the summer of 2024. This incredible 105-mile trek circumnavigates the Mont Blanc massif, winding through France, Italy, and Switzerland. I finished it in 10 days, taking in stunning vistas, enjoying rich cultural experiences, and meeting new people along the way. The hike was physically demanding, and it felt rewarding to be challenged every day.

What trend do you hope makes a comeback?

I’d love to see letter writing make a comback. In a world where communication is increasingly instant and digital, taking the time to sit down and write a letter feels intentional and personal. Letter writing allows for deeper reflection, thoughtfulness, and a sense of connection that a quick text or email can’t quite capture. And there’s nothing like the anticipation you feel while waiting for a letter!
