Joining Aspen Country Day School midway through the 2021-22 school year was a natural for Cecelia, also known as Cec. She quickly became a warm and welcoming presence at the Lower School desk, and is enjoying making many new friends in the school community. Cec grew up in Albany, Georgia and graduated from Valdosta State University with a BS in elementary education. She taught Kindergarten at Aspen Elementary for five years. Most recently, she worked at The City of Aspen/Kids First for 20 years as financial aid coordinator, helping families find childcare solutions.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a nurse, just like my mom. That was not to be, but becoming an educator I still got to care for the young ones in my classroom. That’s why I’m so happy to be at ACDS. I love the energy, enthusiasm, and honesty of children.
Your favorite place on campus?
I am still learning the campus, and I love walking and looking at the flowing water. I also look forward to seeing the children canoeing out on the pond in the spring.
Dream dinner party?
If I could have dinner with anyone it would be to have Betty White and Klaus Obermeyer together for an evening of laughter and learning. I feel there is so much to be learned from the generations before us, and I can only imagine the knowledge between these two legendary people.
What’s something you are looking forward to?
Visiting family and friends after the pandemic is over. For now I’m glad we have video calls!
How did you wind up in the mountains?
I moved to Aspen right after graduation because my sister was living here. I had visited her once and was eager to return to the beauty of Aspen and experience all the seasons! As many before me, I never left. I love the winters, but the summers and fall definitely kept me here.
