Bill Huffman Endowed Fund for Outdoor Education
Introducing the Bill Huffman Endowed Fund for Outdoor Education
In honor of 40 years of changing lives: Huffy Forever
Fresh off a year of backpacking through Latin America and a semester program with the National Outdoor Leadership School, Bill Huffman signed his first teaching contract with Aspen Country Day School on April 27, 1976. Over the next 40 years, Huffy taught P.E. and social studies while also building an Outdoor Education program that would become the heart and soul of an Aspen Country Day education.
As Aspen Country Day School approaches its 50th anniversary in 2020, we are completing the Our Children Our Future Campaign to strengthen the school’s endowment. As part of this campaign, a goal is to raise $1,000,000 toward the Bill Huffman Endowed Fund for Outdoor Education that will honor Huffy and ensure that future students of Aspen Country Day School benefit from his legacy and life’s work.
As a primary focus of our mission, our Outdoor Education program includes two trips a year across Western Colorado and Utah in all four seasons. From Kindergarten through Eighth Grade, students spend a total of 56 days on Outdoor Education programs. Trips emphasize the school’s five core values of character, respect, responsibility, community, and perseverance, and each program is led by our teachers and staff so that children can travel without their parents to build independence and resilience. Students gain experience in activities such as hiking, rock climbing, trail finding, mountain biking, backcountry ski touring, avalanche safety, kayaking, canoeing, and whitewater rafting.
