A Colorado native, Sophie grew up in Denver and came to Aspen in fall 2026 to join Aspen Country Day School as the PreK–Third Grade Science Teacher. She holds a BA in Neuroscience and Psychology from the University of Colorado Boulder and an MA in Psychology from Claremont Graduate University. Before coming to ACDS, Sophie taught upper elementary and middle school science at Stanley British Primary School in Denver and worked as a substitute teacher at Colorado Academy.
What led you to a career in education?
The inspiration came the year I subbed at Colorado Academy and they needed a trip leader for the middle school canoeing trip. I eagerly volunteered, and after a week on the river bonding over the challenge of paddling through extreme wind, I knew that teaching was where I was meant to be. Shortly after, I read the book “The House in the Cerulean Sea” by TJ Klune, which reaffirmed how much I love the wonder that comes from working with students, all of whom have something unique and beautiful to offer.
What trend do you hope makes a comeback?
Playing outside! I hope kids get to experience the gradual release of getting to organically and spontaneously explore their neighborhood and play with friends. I think the parent-child trust and child self-efficacy it builds is immense. Boredom and free time are ingredients for creativity.
Favorite way to spend a weekend or day off?
In summer I love hiking and backpacking, so I’m always looking for new places to explore. I’m also an avid reader and can spend hours upon hours reading on a weekend (book recommendations welcome).
Hidden talent or special skill?
I can solve a Rubik’s Cube! On a good day, I can do it in under a minute.
